Our Story

Over four decades ago, a group of three compassionate women began what would eventually grow into the Creston Valley Gleaners Society. Initially, their mission was to "glean" unused fruit and produce from local orchards, farms, and gardens. They would ask farmers for the surplus produce, pick it themselves, and clean it in one of the women's basements, then distribute it to families in need.

As the demand for their efforts grew, they expanded operations to Gail Simpson's garage. Only a few years later, community members began donating gently used clothing and household items. More volunteers joined, and it became clear that these items could be sold to generate funds for the Food Bank. This marked the beginning of the Gleaners Society as we know it today.

Thanks to the generosity of our community and the dedication of countless volunteers, the Gleaners Society has grown into a vital resource, supporting local families in need and making a lasting impact on the Creston Valley.

Our Story Continued...

Located in the heart of Creston, BC, a charming town with a population just over 5,000, our operations are bustling hubs of activity. Gleaners, Gleaners Too, and the Food Bank (which also includes a Food Recovery program) collectively form a network of support and community engagement. Each weekday morning our buildings come alive with the energy and dedication of our volunteers.

Our volunteer base is the cornerstone of our organization. With over 140 dedicated individuals, we sort, clean, salvage, and categorize an extensive array of donated items. These volunteers contribute their time across various departments, ensuring that each donation is utilized effectively to support our mission. We offer flexible volunteering schedules to accommodate different availabilities, reinforcing our commitment to making volunteerism accessible and rewarding.

Many of our volunteers have dedicated over 20 years of service, a testament to their unwavering commitment and the positive environment we've cultivated.

In Creston, there is a deep sense of pride associated with the Gleaners Society. Locals often express it by saying, "I got it at Gleaners" or "I gave it to Gleaners." This reflects the community's connection to our organization and the significant role we play in supporting and uplifting one another.

Our story is one of community helping community, transforming the simple act of donating into a powerful vehicle for change and support. Whether through volunteering, donating, or shopping at Gleaners, every action contributes to a cycle of giving that benefits the entire Creston area.
